Collaboration : M Plus x OBELLERY Project

“Pearls of Commonality, 16”

Subverting general preconception of what is considered precious-material, Belinda’s neckpiece invites us to reconsider the value of familiar items we often take for granted.

The relationship between jewellery, architecture and materialsis examined by juxtaposing the utilitarian and the ornamental. Found objects such as concrete fragments and scaffolding bamboo are made into precious conditions; fabricated into “pearls of commonality” through lapidary and jewellery- smithing techniques.

This piece acts as a wearable index of materials we encounter in everyday life.

Material: Concrete, Bamboo, Tiles, Brick, Rock, Brass, Copper, Glass etc.

“Reconstruction”

Taking inspiration from the construction materials of the M+ building, this collection “Reconstruction” makes use of concrete and brass to illustrate the intertwined relationship between humans and the environment. By recreating fragments of rocks in various shapes with concrete, the work emphasizes the importance of every single piece of rock and highlights how even the tiniest grain serves as an indispensable part of the whole process. The collection contemplates the idea of destruction and reconstruction to show the way everything in the city is precariously balanced.

Material: Brass & Concrete

”&ncasement”

Pearl’s “&ncasement” encapsulates the artist’s reimagining of architectural elements in the form of a wearable.

Designed to subvert the primary purpose of construction elements, architectural inspiration and are appropriated for pure aesthetic value; conjuring curiosities such as “organic-right- angles“ and mechanical conjointments that serves to facilitate “a possibility”.

Pertaining to the artist’s anti-pragmatic agenda, the piece is created without blueprints, both the final piece and the process challenges the preconceived boundaries that surrounds construction principles and jewellery tradition.

Material: Brass, Concrete & Steel

“One Encounter“

This piece is a combination of spaces, installations and functions. A ceramic exterior, concealing a rotatable brass inside, is a symbolic representation of the M+ itself; the round form represents an inclusive space befitting of all forms of art; the movable metal core, a flexible space to accommodate a wide range of small-scale exhibitions and performances in the museum.

The choice of colour is inspired by the iconic architectural element of the building, the dark green ceramic tiles, with windows in between.

Material: Brass & Ceramic
